Finning Gets the Bug for Small Engines

The fortuitous meeting of Caterpillar distributor Finning (UK) Ltd with Volkswagen Marine at the London Boat Show one year ago came to fruition with the announcement at this year's show of a partnership whereby Finning will supply VW marine diesel engines in the UK.

The symbiosis of these two high-tech companies with big spends on research and development is natural.

Volkswagen Marine has been going for three years with specially developed versions of Volkswagen's ubiquitous four cylinder 1,896cc and five cylinder 2,461cc auto engines.

The Volkswagen engines currently range in power output from 40hp to 150hp.

The VW range will be extended upwards to approximately 300hp, at which point Caterpillar's substantial line-up from 350hp to above 3,000hp will complete a broad spectrum of engine choices from one supplier. Finning's expertise at correct engine application provides assurance for both leisure and commercial users.

Volkswagen engines currently available include naturally aspirated four cylinder models rated at 40, 50 and 60hp and the five cylinder in naturally aspirated 55 and 75hp models plus turbocharged versions at 100, 120 and 150hp.

On all Volkswagen marine engines valve clearance is adjusted via hydraulic tappets and all drive belts use automatic tensioners for freedom from maintenance.

A built-in electric drain pump makes oil changes easy and prevents residual oil from getting into the bilge. All engines utilise two-stage direct injection technology for quiet operation and reduced emissions.

All engines comply with the Lake Constance II legislation, even in twin installation, enabling British boatyards to export to environmentally sensitive markets.

While the Volkswagen Marine engines may be most likely to find use in leisure craft, they have sufficient mechanical and thermal reserves for uninterrupted use of rated power to make them suitable choices in commercial applications such as water taxis and patrol craft. One operator of six water taxis in Venice has clocked up as much as 3,000 hours over two years without difficulty.
