Voith Offer a New Low Cost Shiphandling Concept
01 Jan 2004
German propulsion and tractor tug specialists, Voith Schiffstechnik Gmbh (Marine Technology) continue to pursue their share of the market for shiphandling tractor tugs by offering a new low cost solution. This latest solution, offered to operators requiring an agile, vessel with a useful bollard pull, capable of working in the confined areas of docks and harbours, has been dubbed the HIMET (Highly Manoeuvrable Economy Tractor).
A key feature of this completely new tractor design is the use of a single engine and just one Voith propulsion unit. The proposed new vessel is a 'fin first' tractor tug, with a deep skeg forward and a relatively shallow afterbody mounting the single Voith unit.
Designed as a 'no frills' day boat, capable of operation by a small crew, the vessel on offer is 23m in length overall, with a beam of 9m, maximum draft of 4m and displacement of about 300 tonnes. For this size of vessel a Voith 28GII/210 propulsion unit is proposed, with a main engine producing 1925kW (2600bhp).
A bollard pull of approximately 35 tonnes is anticipated along with a rapid rate of turn. The outline specification for the proposed vessel includes a towing winch mounted on the foredeck and very basic 'day-boat' accommodation. Tractor tugs with single Voith units have been used successfully for many years, with many examples in service with naval tugs fleets, harbour authorities and towage companies.
Those early vessels had quite a different configuration, with the skeg aft and the single unit mounted low down in the forward part of the hull.
In more recent years shiphandling Voith tractors have invariably embodied twin propulsion units giving them superior agility, better performance in tidal conditions and improved bollard pull. This new design of single unit tractor, with its new hull design and the later generation of Voith propulsion units appears to be a very different proposition.
