Tandem Lift Cranes for Antwerp's New Mega-Terminal
01 Jul 2004
Kalmar has received an order for six super post-Panamax ship to shore container cranes from a consortium led by P&O Ports Antwerp.
The cranes will be fitted with Bromma spreaders and will be handed over in June and August 2005 for the new Antwerp Gateway terminal at the Deurganckdok on the Schelde left bank. With a total quay length of 2,500m and a projected 26 ship to shore cranes, the new terminal will have a capacity of 3.5 million teu. With an outreach of 55m, these high-speed, heavy duty cranes will be capable of handling ships over 20 containers wide. The cranes will be prepared for future tandem lift handling, a new development successfully tested whereby two 40ft containers are lifted simultaneously.
Meanwhile, Rotterdam stevedore ECT continues with the expansion of its Delta container terminal by ordering 11 more automated stacking cranes (ASC) from Kalmar, bringing its fleet to 120.
ECT developed the ASC concept together with Kalmar and introduced the first units into service in 1989. The new cranes are similar to previous units delivered to ECT in that they are capable of stacking 1 over 4 high and 6 containers wide.
