A&P Falmouth Lands RN Refit
01 Jul 2004
The British Royal Navy's Antarctic Patrol Vessel HMS Endurance berthed last month at A&P Falmouth for a multi-million pound mid-life refit that is scheduled to take four months. Its arrival followed by only two weeks the departure of another icebreaker, M/V Polar Star, which had left following a refit.
The award of the refit contract is a major coup for A&P Falmouth as it is the first of its type to be awarded to a commercial shipyard for over a decade. Refit work on HMS Endurance will include complete hull blasting and repairing, general refit work, steelwork and the overhaul of the 3,000hp main engines and auxiliary equipment.
The 14 year old Norwegian built Class 1 icebreaker was originally named M/V Polar Circle. During its seven month tours of duty in the Antarctic, the vessel keeps close links with the Foreign Office, the UK Hydrographic Office, and British Antarctic Survey.
