Destroyer's Indestructible Clips Replaced
01 Jul 2004
The original Jubilee Clips on board the last of the World War II destroyers, HMS Cavalier, have been replaced recently after being damaged in ongoing restoration works.
Now a popular exhibit at The Historic Dockyard at Chatham in Kent UK, HMS Cavalier was originally launched in 1944. The vessel is slowly being restored by a dedicated team of volunteers, including one sailor who had formerly served on board.
Part of the ongoing work has recently included some renovation of the plumbing in the Ratings washroom, where a severely blocked drainpipe was a problem. Existing Jubilee Clips thought to be original 60 year old items were damaged during removal of the pipes and had to be replaced at last. Each of the 10 basins in the washroom required two Jubilee Clips to be used on the upright drainpipe.
Commander Lumley Robinson invented the original Jubilee worm drive hose clip. The company bearing his name, L Robinson & Co (Gillingham) Ltd, continues to manufacture the Jubilee Clip and is a conveniently near neighbour of the Dockyard. The company donated two handy dispenser packs to the restoration project, each containing an assortment of mobile stock packs to ensure there was sufficient variation of choice to cover all areas of the ship.
There are 75 different compartments throughout the vessel where Jubilee Clips were likely to have been used when the vessel was built, as there were no other worm drive hose clips on the market at the time.
Areas of additional probable application included the engine room, hydraulics apparatus on the guns, the boiler room, cold room, magazine and elsewhere.
One particular area of usage was for damage control following an engagement, when explosions could cause damage to pipework throughout the ship. On such occasions, sailors grabbed a Damage Control (DC) Bag which included all necessary tools, including a good selection of Jubilee Clips.
