Vessel Repair & Maintenance

Flying Start to Year for ASRY

The ASRY repair yard in Dubai has had a busy start to the year despite regional uncertainties. There has been no let up in the pace of work for the yard and sales were up by 10% on the same period in 2003, with 49 vessels being repaired and painted.

What is especially good news for the yard is that during the first quarter, international sales were up by an impressive 55% with a total of 23 vessels being repaired. The local market was represented by 26 vessels and nine owners had multiple dockings during the period.

ASRY reports a very healthy order book into the summer, which should keep all docks extremely busy. A broad range of vessels have been in for repair, including ULCCs, chemical carriers and dredgers. The latter category, including Van Oord's trailing suction hopper dredger HAM 312, reflects the sheer number of dredgers in the region working on various land reclamation projects.

The demand for blasting and painting has been at a constant high throughout the quarter with over 1.4 million m 2of painting being completed and some 364,000m 2of blasting. A total of 12 major boiler repairs were completed, drawing on the yard's full range of facilities to complete the work on schedule.

Steel repairs were also in high demand, with over 1,400 tonnes of steel being used.
