    The seagoing, self-propelled cutter suction dredger JFJ De Nul , built by IHC Holland 'sKinderdijk yard for Belgian contractor Jan De Nul , has won the Netherlands' prestigious Ship of the Year Award of the Royal Dutch Union of Technicians in Shipbuilding (KNVTS). Now the most powerful vessel of its type in the world, and bristling with innovation, the JFJ De Nul was declared winner from a field of almost 100 candidates.

    The largest trailing suction hopper dredger ever built in China was launched last month at the Hudong Zhonghua Shipyard in Shanghai. The Southampton based firm's oil containment booms have earned a worldwide reputation for effectiveness and durability, and their latest Hd Boom is stronger and heavier than the previous fast deployment Hi-Sprint Booms. 

  • Flanders Moves Waste to Water

    The European Commission hasapproved a Belgium Flemish scheme to subsidise domestic waste transport through inland waterways to the tune of 7.4m. The project will offset the additional costs of transporting domestic waste by inland waterway rather than road. 

  • Norway and France Embrace Pollution Prevention

    Rapidly increasing tanker traffic along the coast of Norway, especially in the far north, has raised fears of extensive pollution in the event of a tanker grounding. An important role of the new UT512 design for the Norwegian Coastguard will therefore be towing and pollution prevention.

    Pier 400 is an all new facility built at the Port of Los Angeles in California USA. New berths and container areas are set to open, expanding on a first phase which was completed in August 2002. In total, Pier 400 adds six new berths which cater for vessels up to and including 230,000 tonnes displacement. 

  • Fugro Has a Boring Time in Poole

    The proposed second crossing for Poole Harbour will span a 19m stretch of the Backwater Channel between Poole and Hamworthy. Designed to become a memorable landmark, the new bridge will feature two triangular bascules which, as vessels pass through, will rotate into the vertical position forming a visually dramatic twin sails effect. The bridge will open hourly, 3000 times per year, and be capable of operating in wind speeds of 70mph. 

  • BMT Inputs Boxport Design

    British Maritime Technology 'sSingapore based subsidiary BMT Asia Pacific Pte Ltd hasrecently advised on the design of a major new deep water container terminal at Sepangar Bay in eastern Malaysia.
