Cranes Get A Lift In Tilbury

One of the most challenging aspects of a massive logistics exercise currently underway at the UK Port of Tilbury was carried out late last month with the barge transport of three large ship to shore container cranes.

The cranes, weighing approximately 400 tonnes each, were being moved from the East Branch Dock at Tilbury to new sites on the other side of the port to make way for a new £35m paper terminal for customer Stora Enso.

The new facility, which is due for completion in Spring 2005, will give the port and additional 800,000 tonnes capacity for paper products. The new operation will be one of the most innovative paper storage facilities in the UK, featuring an advanced 14 story racking system.

To accommodate the new paper terminal, Tilbury has undertaken a massive restructuring of its business to better utilise available space and create new business unit clusters for existing customers.
