MSS To Occupy Minimal Space at seawork
01 Jun 2004
First time seawork exhibitor Mobile Shelter Systems (MSS) will be showing an innovative Storage and Transport Frame initially developed for the military market to provide a flexible modular load system interoperable with all modes of transportation including ISO containers and aircraft cargo pallets.
The 450 kg capacity adjustable shelves and internal divider system enables most usual transportation packaging to be dispensed with. The field-proven, collapsible and rugged frames substantially reduce the number of containers required for equipment deployment by up to 30%. This decreases the requirement for ships, trucks and aircraft, reducing both transportation costs and deck space requirement. Frames can be handled with a forklift truck, crane, or helicopter apex sling and can easily be secured to the deck. The MSS Weather Cover provides protection to contents from inclement weather and UV light.
The Southampton Oceanography Centre (SOC) has recently benefited from the space saving characteristics of the MSS Frame during a scientific voyage to the Canary Islands. Traditionally SOC stored and transported all their equipment and support material in large aluminium boxes which required a vast amount of deck space. Even when the scientific equipment was assembled on site, the empty transport boxes occupied the same amount of space.
The MSS Frames provided a more compact storage facility in the first place with the added bonus of collapsing when not in use, thereby minimising occupied deck space. SOC was so pleased with the performance of the Frames that they propose to extend their use to include the storage and transportation of fragile seabed core samples to reduce the possibility of damage.
