Safe Switches for Ministry of Defence Lift Systems

Man-machine safety systems specialist Schmersal UK Ltd has won an order to supply a total of 150 of its AZM415 double solenoid locking switches to Industrial & Marine Lift Services (IMLS) for the refurbishment of double gated lifting systems for two UK Ministry of Defence supply ships. The order is to be completed in four stages, the first of which has already seen Schmersal supply 36 units.

The double gate lifts are very large and long, used to move supplies around the ship from one deck to another. Solenoid locking switches are used as there is not space in the lift area to activate the locks in the normal way.

Mike Millen, IMLS' managing director said, 'We needed a switch with the usual lock contacts as well as a positive lock and a solenoid device that could unlatch the gate.

The switch also needed to be small enough and slim enough for use in the restricted space and Schmersal's AZM was the only one that could do the job.'
