VOSTA LMG Delivers On Eastern Promise
01 Jun 2004
The largest trailing suction hopper dredger ever built in China was launched last month at the Hudong Zhonghua Shipyard in Shanghai. Built for client Huanghua Port , the 5,000m 3dredger Shenhua benefited from a complete engineering package and dredging components supplied by Amsterdam based VOSTA LMG , which also had complete technical responsibility for the dredger. Board members of the Port, the shipyard, and VOSTA LMG all participated in the ceremony.
Huanghua Port is located on the northwest coast of China and is the main hub port for the worldwide transport of coal mined in northern China. As continuous dredging is required to maintain the depth of the approach fairway, the board of management of the Shenhua Group, which operates the port, decided to invest in their own trailer.
Fitting out of the 122m LOA vessel continues at Hudong Zhonghua shipyard, with Shenhua due to be handed over in the third quarter of this year. When operational, the vessel will dredge to depths of 26m through a 900 mm suction pipe and will be capable of sailing to disposal grounds at 14.3 knots.
In what is obviously a busy time for VOSTA LMG board members in Asia, the company had only one day earlier handed over another trailing suction hopper dredger in Vietnam.
The 1,500m 3capacity Thai Binh Duong features VOSTA LMG loading and unloading systems and was built at Damen Shipyards Hoogezand in the Netherlands. Launched last November, upon completion the vessel sailed to its home port of Hai Phong via the Suez Canal. During the six week voyage, the Vietnamese crew was thoroughly trained by VOSTA LMG dredging experts to operate all systems.
The 64m LOA dredger will be operated by the Waterway Dredging and Construction company 1 (WADRECO 1), having been supplied under a loan from the German Government to the Vietnamese Government. It will dredge to a depth of 21m through a single 600mm diameter suction pipe and will be used primarily for maintenance dredging. This will contribute to safe navigation at Vietnam's main import and export harbours, especially Hai Phong and Hon Gai.
Main components supplied by VOSTA LMG include the side suction pipe with turning gland and active draghead, gantries with swell compensators and winches, dredge pump and jet water pump, the hydraulic installation and all dredging automation, including hardware and software.
