Fugro Opts for Airborne Bathymeter
01 Jun 2004
Dutch survey conglomerate Fugro, which maintains nearly 9,000 staff in over 60 countries, is to acquire an Optech International Shoals-1000T airborne Lidar bathymetry system under the auspices of its US subsidiary, Fugro Pelagos Inc of San Diego.
The company has hitherto been using a 1000T system for bathymetric surveys following a teaming agreement with Canadian-owned Optech signed in early 2003. But with the purchase of a system due for delivery next February, it says it will in effect become the sole commercial provider of airborne lidar surveys for both shallow water survey and coastal mapping operations.
Fugro adds that the 1000-T is the only system of its type to provide both a hydrographic and topographic mode of operation within the same airborne sensor, which is configurable in mid-flight at the switch of a button. Readily installed on suitable fixed-wing aircraft of opportunity, the system is additionally fitted with a co-registered digital camera for provision of high quality images at one frame per second.
A similar entry into the airborne lidar bathmetry market was announced earlier this year with the establishment of Admiralty Coastal Surveys, a joint venture between the UK Hydrographic Office and Airborne Hydrography and Topeye of Sweden involving future deployment of a comparable laser-based system, Hawkeye 2.
