Hydrographic Survey by David Goodfellow

Gardline Begins CHP Project

Great Yarmouth-based Gardline Hydro has begun a two-year Civil Hydrography Programme (CHP) to survey western approaches to the English Channel on behalf of the government body responsible for safety of navigation in domestic waters, the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA). Its purpose is to update Admiralty Charts andother publications.

Involving approximately 8,800 square km of seabed mapping, the project is Gardline's ninth successive annual CHP and is the first to feature multibeam bathymetric techniques. The company's own hydrographic survey ship, MV Ocean Seeker , has been assigned for the task equipped with a Kongsberg-Simrad EM 1002 multibeam system.

Seasonal operations are being carried out from April to October this year and next and include bathymetric surveys, identification of shipping hazards, seabed object detection, composition of the seabed ground-truthed by modified day grab, and obstructions wire swept using a single vessel drift method whenever necessary.

Gardline will subsequently submit all results to the UK Hydrographic Office for validation prior to updating of relevant Admiralty Chart databases. Meanwhile, further afield in Africa, the company has also been retained to survey the Namibian Continental Margin and Walvis Ridge with the aim of enabling the Government to submit a possible claim for extending its exclusive economic zone beyond the statutory 200nm limit. Operations will also include multi-channel seismic surveys.
