Work has resumed in the English Channel on the removal of the car carrier Tricolor which sank in the main navigation channel following a collision off the French coast in December 2002.

The vessel was cut into nine sections last summer by the salvage consortium 'Combinatie Berging Tricolor', whose members include Smit Salvage BV, Scaldis Salvage & Marine Contractors NV, URS Salvage & Maritime Contracting NV, and Multraship Salvage BV.

All cutting work was finished last year and five of the nine sections removed before the operation was halted in November due to adverse weather conditions.

The remaining sections will be removed over the summer, with any remaining debris cleared by the floating sheerlegs Taklift 4 equipped with a special wreck grab.

Taklift 4 is assisted by the salvage tug Banckert .Besides removing the remaining sections, the salvors will recover other debris within the wreck site, including many of the 3,000 luxury cars on board the vessel when it sank. As there may still be small quantities of oil trapped on board the Tricolor, the multipurpose vessel Union Beaver will be stationed alongside to provide pollution response during operations which are expected to be completed in September, depending on weather conditions.
