Essex Flood Defences Strategy Due
01 Jun 2004
Consulting engineers Halcrow is in the final stages of a project on the Roach and Crouch estuaries in Essex.
Working on behalf of the UK's Environment Agency , the company is developing a flood management study for the next 50 years.
The aim of the Roach and Crouch Flood Management Strategy is to reduce flood risk and promote sustainable flood management schemes while at the same time enhancing the natural environment and regenerating valuable coastal habitat. The strategy considers the impact of the existing flood defences on the natural development of the estuary system and sets out the options for the efficient management of the estuary flood defences.
As part of the strategy's development, a wide-ranging consultation process has been undertaken. Information has been disseminated through a series of booklets, face to face meetings and public exhibitions to gain the views of interested organisations and the general public, and to assist with the identification of the preferred options for flood management. English Nature has recently examined the ecological function of the Roach and Crouch estuary habitats and this new information will be incorporated into the final option selection process.
The final strategy is due for completion soon and will include an outline of the options raised during the public consultation process. Once in place, the strategy will be reviewed on a five year basis through a process of ongoing consultation with the public and other stakeholders.
