Marine Energy Challenge Assessing Projects

The Carbon Trust has chosen consulting engineers Halcrow Group Ltd , in partnership with engineering specialists Peter Brotherhood Ltd and Abbott Risk Consulting Ltd , as one of the main engineering consortia to be involved in its new Marine Energy Challenge (MEC) programme.

The MEC has been established to access a number of prospective marine energy projects.

Engineering consortia chosen by the Carbon Trust will perform detailed engineering analysis of existing wave and tidal technologies to identify possible reductions in power generation costs and provide detailed prototype designs in collaboration with several marine developers.

The £2.5m programme is forecast for completion by the end of the 2004/2005 financial year and currently involves eight developers, four of whom are from outside the UK. The MEC has an international focus in order to attract foreign investment into the UK.

Peter Brotherhood Ltd, which specialises in the engineering design and manufacture of renewable power generation systems, will provide design and manufacturing guidance to the three marine developers that have been allocated to the Halcrow consortium.
