'QM2's Gigantic Safety Requirement
01 Jun 2004
Cosalt Safety and Protection , the UK distributor for McMurdo pyrotechnics, electronics and lights, supplied 6,061 of its Premier Lifejackets fitted with McMurdo's L7 tamper-proof lifejacket lights for the recently commissioned cruise liner Queen Mary 2 before its maiden voyage.
Cosalt supplied Cunard 's previous flagship, Queen Elizabeth 2 , with lifejackets for its maiden voyage in 1969.
Cosalt's Premier lifejacket has been successful in the cruise market because it is easy to put on, comfortable to wear and takes up minimal storage space on board ship. Fully approved to MCA/UK SOLAS standards, it features a single quick release buckle, high intensity SOLAS Grade reflective tape and a whistle with lanyard.
McMurdo's L7 compact, automatic L7 light can be neatly inserted into a holder imbedded in the lifejacket foam. This ensures the lifejacket remains low profile, aiding the safe and snag-free evacuation of passengers should an emergency occur. The design allows for easy fitting of replacement lights into the holder after their five year service life.
