Rugged Rigid Inflatables Return to seawork
01 Jun 2004
seawork2004 exhibitor Ocean Dynamics International Ltd has a long and much admired pedigree for building high performance RIBs, including the modified Ribworker 35 which appeared on the floating pontoon at seawork2003 only weeks before Bear Grylls and his team of adventurers took it on the first ever successful crossing of the North Atlantic via the Arctic Circle in an open boat.
Not content to rest on its laurels, Ocean Dynamics has recently launched a new 8m 'Defender' class to meet the demands for a road-towable, ISO container transportable RIB for arduous duties worldwide.
Like all Ocean Dynamics RIBs, the hulls and superstructure are all made of marine grade welded aluminium.
Available with a choice of inboard and outboard engines, solid or inflatable tubes, and with multi-role bolt-on deck furniture, the design can be adapted to an almost infinite number of roles. Versions of the Defender have already been sold to rescue services, the British Government's Ministry of Defence for missile recovery duties, and to Greenpeace.
Three of Ocean Dynamics' larger 11m 'Cyclone' class wheelhouse RIBs have just been delivered to the Scilly Isles in MCA COPCAT 2 passenger craft specification. This model is rapidly becoming the definitive passenger RIB in its class, with a Scania D9 480 diesel driving a Hamilton 322 waterjet through a ZF gearbox to provide the perfect tool for navigating the treacherous waters around the Scillies.
The British Antarctic Survey has just purchased two fully self righting versions for rescue and survey duties in frozen Antarctica while, in dramatic contrast, an air conditioned version has been sold to a Middle Eastern customer for rapid medical evacuation duties in the Gulf.
As if to prove that no Ocean Dynamics RIB requires or receives an easy life, a 15m 'Odyn' class boat is being prepared for a circumnavigation of Africa in an expedition to raise awareness of the acute water shortages throughout the troubled continent.
