Damen Shipyard Galatz Delivers Al Salaam
01 Jun 2004
In March of this year Damen Shipyards Galatz , in Romania, delivered an important new vessel to the Sea Ports Corporation (SPC) for operation at the Beshair SBM terminal south of Port Sudan.
Named Al Salaam , the vessel is a Damen Stan Tug 4511 designed for towing, berthing, fire fighting and pollution control. This delivery is a further illustration of Damen's commitment to the newly redeveloped Romania shipyard. With facilities and working practices now closely aligned with those at the Group's headquarters in the Netherlands at Gorinchem the Galatz shipyard is now regularly turning out vessels of all type to a very high standard.
Al Salaam is the latest addition to the successful twin-screw Damen Stan Tug series. Two shorter versions of the same basic configuration (Stan Tugs 4011), were delivered to an owner in the Middle East in 2003. The tug is classified by Lloyd's Register of Shipping (100 A1 'Tug' LMC for Unrestricted Service and has a heavily built hull with a transom stern and rounded bow.
The tug is 45.70m in length overall, with an overall breadth of 11.22m, depth of 4.90m, draft of 4.04m and displacement of 1135 tonnes. A double chine hull-form affords good water-flow to the twin-screws and nozzles and incorporates a large skeg aft. The hull is divided into five compartments and incorporates 10mm thick side and bottom plating and decks of 8mm. A large clear after deck can sustain a load of 5 tonnes sq/m and is heavily reinforce around the area of the stern roller. A heavy rubber block fender is fitted at the bow and on the corners of the transom and extensive tyre fendering is fitted at the sides.
The superstructure has ample space for the captain's cabin, chief engineer's cabin and two officers' cabins. Provision has been made for a crew of 20 persons, with captain's, chief engineers and two double officers cabins on the forecastle deck, one double cabin on the main deck and three four-persons cabins below deck. On the main deck a large mess room with adjacent galley is situated at port side, with laundry and stores at starboard. The complete accommodation is air-conditioned by means of a large capacity low-pressure air-conditioning system.
Al Salaam has a very large wheelhouse with control positions fore and aft. Main propulsion and bow thruster controls are available at each position. Controls for the aft winch are located at the after control station. The outfit of nautical and communication equipment complies with the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) for Area A2 with complete Navtex coverage.
The tug is powered by two six-cylinder MAN 6L28/32 A engines with a total output of 2940bkW (4000bhp) at 775rev/min. Power is transmitted via Reintjes, type WAF 1942 gearboxes to a pair of fixed pitch propellers of 2500mm diameter, rotating in Van der Giessen nozzles. Two MAN D2866 LXE30 auxiliary engines, driving 150kVA Stamford generators provide power for the ship's electrical system. A further MAN D2840 LE 401 diesel engine drives a 1350m 3Nijhuis pump to supply the main fire fighting system.
On trials Al Salaam achieved a bollard pull of 55.9 tonnes and a free running speed of 12.5 knots.
The vessel is steered by means of two streamlined (airfoil) double plate rudders, aided when necessary by a hydraulically driven Schottel SST 170 LK bow thruster.
The towing winch installed has a pull of 18 tonnes at a line speed of 11 m/min and is remotely controlled from the aft wheelhouse control position.
Two tugger winches with a pull of 5 tonnes at 18m/min and two 15 tonne pull capstans are also installed, along with a 65 tonne quick release towing hook. Other deck equipment includes a Palfinger PK18080MD deck crane. A DMT combined anchor/ towing winch, complete with warping head, is fitted on the foredeck adjacent to a towing bitt and fairlead.
For fire-fighting the tug has two Ajax monitors, each with a maximum throw of 120m, mounted on a platform between the funnels. The hull and superstructure are protected by means of a water spray system, and fire-fighting foam is accommodated in a dedicated 28.6m 3tank.
