Fast Ferries Get Slick Refurb

Specialist protective coatings contractor Pyeroy Group hasrecently completed a contract at Harland and Wolff 's Belfast dockyard for the application of an advanced technology anti-fouling system on two of Stena Line 's flagship HSS ferries . Working in collaboration with paint manufacturer International Marine Coatings , Pyeroy was awarded the work as part of the specification for the use of International's high performance Intersleek 400 fouling control system on the two ferries.

Painting recently completed on the Stena Voyager as part of a general dry dock refurbishment follows similar work undertaken last year on the Stena Discovery .The two Stena High-speed Sea Service ferries incorporate a unique hull design and waterjet propulsion system to give them an operating speed of 40 knots, more than twice as fast as traditional ferries.

In keeping with this high speed requirement, International's Intersleek system was specified for use on the vessels' underwater hull and Pyeroy was chosen by International to be nominated painting subcontractor for the project.

Intersleek is a silicone based biocide-free anti-fouling system that has been specifically designed for deep sea high activity ships.

The unique composition of the coating provides an ultra-smooth, low friction and hydrophobic surface onto which anti-fouling organisms have difficulty in settling.

As a result, the superior smoothness of the coating decreases hull friction whilst the vessel is in motion, creating significantly enhanced fuel efficiency through the shorter journey times produced by maintaining high operating speeds over an extended period.

The environmental benefits created by fuel savings are enhanced by the absence of biocides leaching into coastal waters and harbours.

Because of the highly technical nature of the system, correct application is critical to coating performance. As part of the application process, Pyeroy was responsible for installing all scaffolding and environmental containment necessary to control heat and humidity conditions in keeping with the specified coating application procedures.

The project specification involved grit blasting with specialist abrasives in a garnet blast format on the outer aluminium hull, followed by the spray application of the four coat Intersleek system - an anti-corrosion base coat being followed by the functional anti-fouling finish coat.

As part of the re-fitting and refurbishment work undertaken on the two Stena HSS ferries, and in addition to the below waterline anti-fouling system work, Pyeroy was also responsible for the application of cosmetic coating on the vessels' topsides and carried out blasting and re-coating of the ballast tanks.
