SMS Down By the San Francisco Bay Area
01 Mar 2004
Transas Marine USA has been awarded a contract to provide a Spill Management Simulator (SMS) to the California Maritime Academy's Institute of Maritime Technology .
The Centre's goal is to bring stakeholders and researchers together in partnership with the objective of protecting the natural resources and minimising the potential damage of a spill occurring in the San Francisco Bay area and its estuaries.
The Potential Incident Simulation, Control and Evaluation System (PISCES2), initially developed by Transas as an exercise management tool for the US Coast Guard, will provide the core capabilities of the SMS in the initial phase of the Centre's evolution.
PISCES is commercially available software that is used by training specialists and spill response preparedness auditors to provide highly realistic exercises using real-time simulation. Dozens of exercises are conducted each year for terminal operators, petroleum and chemical transportation companies, and power generation facilities, in both tabletop exercises and large scale spill response drill formats utilising the PISCES2 system.
