Until recently most workboat operators have had no choice but to lock their vessel up in the evening and hope to find it as they left it in the morning.
seawork2004 exhibitor Online Telematics Ltd have changed things with Koolboks K-9M , a vessel security and management information system which keeps operators in direct communication with their boat 24/7.
Operated remotely from the skipper's mobile phone using text messages, the K9-M combines security, hazard and warning systems supported by 12 internal sensors and interfaced to a comprehensive range of external sensors. A text message is sent to any named mobile phone whenever a sensor is triggered, informing the recipient of security breaches, hazardous conditions or technical problems.
The integral GPS system detects unauthorised movement and, if the boat is stolen, the locate service sends a text message describing its location in a clear sentence. The K9-M can even be used to immobilise the engine.
In addition to crime prevention, K9-M can log and remotely monitor vessel management information such as engine running hours, speed and distance travelled. It provides an interface for charting systems or Internet/Email access via a PC/PDA. Other features include a bilge pump interface, power management system and remote operation from the home or office computer. Significantly, the device incurs no monthly subscription charges.
