Camarc Design Chasing Newbuild Bonanza

A prototype 45ft rapid response boat designed by UK based Camarc Ltd has been delivered to the US Coast Guard for evaluation in a competitive review process against two other prototypes. The Camarc designed Response Boat - Medium (RB-M) was delivered by Seattle USA based builder Kvichak Marine Industries , which had teamed with the Marinette Marine Corporation serving as prime contractor and programme manager for the prototype project. All three prototype vessels are currently undergoing three months of extensive sea trials and evaluations at the USCG base in Portsmouth, Virginia.

Some 180 craft will be built to the winning design for the US Coast Guards new rapid response boat.

Upon completion of testing, the USCG intends to award a contract to one company for a fleet of approximately 180 RB-M vessels to replace its aging fleet of 41ft utility boats. The six year contract is expected to be awarded this year. If successful, Kvichak and Marinette will share the vessel construction.

Power for the RB-M is provided by twin Detroit Diesel 60 series engines rated at 825bhp each driving Kamewa FF375S waterjets.

This combination provides excellent manoeuvrability and a top speed exceeding 45 knots.

The Camarc double chine hull form ensures that speed is not at the expense of seakeeping.

Camarc's design is the only vessel on trial that is self-righting in all conditions. It also features an innovative cruise generator, the AuraGen Viper manufactured by Aura Systems, to provide AC/DC power.

The USCG's choice to standardise its RB-M fleet will create a safer, more efficient and cost-effective way of operating and maintaining its vessels due to standardised systems, improved maintenance and logistics support capabilities.

The RB-M will be multi-mission capable, with its primary duties being homeland security and search and rescue.
