'Polkitten's Are Slick In the Oil

In the continuing agitated wake of the Prestige disaster, Ro-Clean Desmi and its Madrid representative SENTEC have delivered a third specialised oil spill control vessel to Spain.

Calamon is the latest of three new oil spill control vessels for Spain.

The vessels are working at oil terminals in Algeciras, Ceuta and Huelva, providing multi-purpose workboats that are able to recover, store and transport oil as well as undertake more general duties. The Algeciras boat has already been in service in several incidents and proven its abilities.

The 10.5m LOA Polkitten is a versatile and dynamic oil skimming vessel well suited to sheltered terminal and harbour operations. Ready for action at short notice, oil recovery can begin immediately by simply manoeuvring over the oil slick.

Integrated rope mops recover oil while the vessel is stationary or moving at speeds of up to 4 knots. Up to 2,900 gallons can be stored on board until transfer, which is expedited by an on board diesel hydraulic power pack and oil transfer pump.

The steel-built craft is powered by twin 40hp marine diesel engines for an unloaded speed of 6 knots and a cruising range of 80 nautical miles.
