Each year the International Association of Dredging Companies (IADC) presents an award to the best paper at a particular scientific congress written by a young author. There is no bigger congress than WODCON, the dredging industry's main event, held only once every three years.

Dr Ohimain's paper, entitled 'Environmental Impacts of Dredging in the Niger Delta;

Options for Sediment Relocation to Mitigate Acidification and Enhance Natural Mangrove Restoration', was recommended by the Paper Committee of WODCON as fulfilling the theme of the Congress, 'Dredging In A sensitive Environment'.

IADC secretary general Constantijn Dolmans presented the award saying, 'Dr Ohimain works in a sensitive, chaotic environment. His paper directs towards social and economic issues as well as the ecological aspects. By his convincing presentation and research, he points out the needs of the local communities and the lack of regulatory strengths to support those needs. I see no simple solutions in this particular environment. Possibly those simple solutions do not exist.

However, the honour of the IADC Award might help Dr Ohimain to put forward more strongly his balanced arguments.'

The IADC Award consists of a Certificate of Achievement, ? 1000, and publication of the winning paper in the IADC quarterly journal 'Terra et Aqua'.
