Dredging Instrumentation Gets Major System Upgrade
01 Nov 2004
The 1,400m3 capacity dredgers, built in 1996 by Appledore, already had Damen's dredging equipment on board. In order to benefit from the recent digital developments in dredging instrumentation, the two vessels have recently had Damen's newest Load & Draught Indicator and Suction Tube Positioning System installed.
Damen Dredging Equipment's electro-technical department supplied all new software and hardware in order to replace the original DOS software system. An industrialised computer running Windows XP Professional was placed in the pump room, communicating with a work station in the wheelhouse.
The dredgemaster and the skipper have 17" TFT monitors on their desks with mouse/ keyboard control. The loading/ discharge process and vessel parameters are visualised on one screen and the suction pipe position on another.
The convenience of the new system simplifies work at the two key positions while also delivering higher levels of accuracy, even with the original sensors still in use.
The systems were installed on board the dredgers only six weeks after the order was placed.
Installation, commissioning and training were all completed in two days. Damen Dredging Equipment also maintains a stock of used dredgers, with four currently available.
