Orders for French Fast Oil Recovery System are Taking Off
01 Nov 2004
By the end of this year, four ships equipped with the JLMD fast oil recovery system will be sailing the seas. The first, a tanker belonging to Italian shipowner Navigazione Montanari , was launched and christened on 15 September.
The French company which has developed the system, JLMD Ecologic Group, has orders for installations on some 30 European ships and another 50 ships in Asia are waiting to be equipped with the system.
The simple and ingenious system, pre-installed to the hull of tankers, enables the fast and effective removal of oil and other potential pollutants from marine casualties. It can be fitted to all types of tankers, newbuilds or as retrofits, and requires very little maintenance.
JLMD's supporters and partners for the system include SMIT Salvage, which has signed an exclusive partnership delivering technical expertise and validation of the system.
The partnership enables not only sales of the system but also an 'assistance package', a protocol of action and intervention in the event of a shipwreck. Other partners include the international oil company TAMOIL, The Maritime French Institute, the French national rescue society (SNSM) and the UK P&I club.
Together with its partners, JLMD is approaching governments and organisations such as the IMO to establish the system as an official international standard to be imposed by national or international regulations.
