Humber Staff Top of the Class
01 Nov 2004
Crews at Adsteam Humber have landed a number of professional qualifications recently, and are among the first in the UK to achieve them.
Scott Ward, Steve Jewitt and Dennis Wright, all inshore tug mates, have become the first in England to achieve an NVQ qualification which allowed them to achieve their Inshore Tug Bridge Watch Keeper certification after examination by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. The qualification means all three can now navigate the company's tugs on the Humber.
Port manager Graham Pipe said, 'The NVQ is the result of 18 months' hard work. As these men were among the first to take on the challenge, everything they did was checked and checked again to make sure they were doing it right.'
The learning process included a series of on board sessions and set tasks assessed by the Tug Master and the Chief Engineer.
The academic training and assessment of NVQs was undertaken by Adsteam's training provider MARITAS and verified by Blackpool and Fylde College.
The three had to pass a series of written examinations and a final assessment to gain the grade and then the MCA oral exam before obtaining their Certificate of Competence. All three men hope to eventually become Inshore Tug Masters.
Also, one of Adsteam's mates, Geoff Humphreys, has successfully completed his Inshore Tug Master's NVQ Level 4, allowing him to take the oral MCA examination and become Master of a tug.
He is the first person in the UK to achieve the Inshore Tug Masters NVQ.
