Training Goes to mars2 at SMM Exhibition in Hamburg
01 Nov 2004
Following the split of STN Atlas Elektronik last year, much of the operation remained in Bremen with Rheinmetall Defence Electronics GmbH , which launched its new Maritime Safety and Security Training Environment (mars2) at the recent SMM Exhibition inHamburg.
With the ISPS Code considerably tightening security requirements on board ships, mars2 introduces a holistic training and education concept for safety and security at sea.
The core of the new concept is mars2, tailored especially to cover all safety and security aspects, such as on board fire, inrush of water, collision, running aground, MOB, evacuation, damage/destruction of ship, hijacking or seizure, attack, and the potential use of the ship to cause incidents or be used as a weapon.
Also covered are search and rescue operations, personnel accidents, machinery breakdown, cargo shifting, tampering with cargo, unauthorised access, stowaways and smuggling.
The system provides the development and combination of simulated catastrophe scenarios, technical malfunctions and disastrous chain reactions and can be configured for the training of individuals or teams.
The ship model can be tailored to customer requirements, with a detailed graphical representation providing access to every deck and major ship systems such as electrical, propulsion and steering. Communications systems are replicated and function in real time so as to maximise authenticity.
In this environment, trainers can represent, repeat and retrain, under modified conditions, safety and security aspects again and again until the trainee is able to recognise, assess and act in an emergency or crisis situation accordingly.
Management, operational and crew requirement levels have been considered according to the STCW 95 regulation.
mars2 covers all ISPS required training aspects, from Advanced Fire Fighting to Ship Security/Company Security Officers Training and Crowd & Crisis Management. The concept includes all documentation necessary to manage a maritime emergency situation including courseware, contingency plans and 'train the trainer' courses.
For greater intensity of training, debriefing with replay of exercises and assessment is possible.
