Multraship and Titan Join Forces in Romania
01 Nov 2004
Terneuzen-based Multraship Salvage has started work on a three-month project to remove the wreck of the 4,497gt Rostok from the Romanian River Danube.
The vessel sank at Mile 31 of the Danube in 1991, blocking the channel. Several attempts have been made to remove sections of the wreck and partial navigation was restored. Now, under an EU-sponsored tender, The Rostok Wreck Removal Consortium, made up of Multraship Salvage, Titan Maritime and Detlacons (a Romanian dredging company) will remove the wreck completely.
Multraship managing director Leendert Muller says, 'We have deployed our floating sheer legs Cormorant to Romania for this job, along with Multrasalvor II , our multi purpose salvage vessel, the tugboat Fonda and local equipment. This is a busy river and the wreck has settled and silted heavily, but we expect to remove all of it within three months, restoring full navigation to this section of the Danube' Fifteen companies and consortia tendered for the wreck removal, of which only two pre-qualified, prior to the contract award to the Multraship consortium.
Multraship has recently completed the salvage of the dredger Thor R , which sank in Ejsberg harbour, and has been busy during 2004, including salvaging two grounded bulk carriers in Danish waters.
