Titan salvage 'Skate - III'

A recent incident in bad weather around the south coast of Britain brought a small salvage job almost to the doorstep of Titan Maritime attheir Newhaven base. On the morning of 21 October the jack-up barge Skate III wasfound aground in the surf on the beach at nearby Seaford.

The 40ft 2barge had been carrying out test borings at Peacehaven in connection with a proposed sewer outfall and was carried away during the night whilst unmanned.

Titan was contracted to salvage the rig by owners Seacore and managed to secure the vessel, with the assistance of earthmoving equipment, to prevent further movement in the heavy surf until the modular barge could be dismantled. This operation proved to be hazardous and time consuming and several attempts were necessary before calmer conditions allowed work to proceed on 24 and 25 October to haul the vessel up the beach and commence dismantling. A couple of days later the entire vessel had been disassembled into modular sections and moved, via trucks, to Titan's Newhaven, UK yard.

Salvage of the vessel included recovering four broken leg sections that had drifted and landed at various points long the coast, up to 18 miles from where the jack-up was finally beached.
