Lifeboat Builder's Eastern Promise
01 Oct 2004
Norwegian lifeboat and davit specialist Schat-Harding hasadvanced its strategy to expand market share with cargo ships built at Asian yards by taking over the lifeboat manufacturing plant and product range of China's Beiyang Boatbuilding Co . The lifeboat factory at Qingdao currently produces about 100 boats per year from a range of five models.
SchatHarding looks to boost output to 250 boats annually, in capacities of from 6 to 38 persons.
The acquisition gives SchatHarding the ability to produce lifeboats for a major segment of the world's conventional cargo ship market, whose Asian builders do not wish to import boats from Europe. The Chinese yard will be strengthened with new management and quality control from Norway as well as a review of the product range.
It is anticipated that some 80% of the yard's production will go to Japanese and Korean shipyards building bulk carriers, container ships and tankers.
