New Ship to Shore Crane for Felixstowe Extension

The UK Port of Felixstowe took delivery of its latest Ship to Shore Gantry Crane (SSGC) late last month when the second of an order of three SSCGs arrived from China.

Also in the order from the Zhenhua Port Machinery Company (ZPMC) are 10 Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes (RTGCs).

Together with the remaining SSCG, which is scheduled for delivery later this year, the Port will boast a total of 88 RTGCs and 28 SSGCs. The current order follows another from ZPMC in 2002, consisting of 10 RTGCs and two SSGCs for Trinity Terminal.

The latest crane made a nine week voyage by sea from China, specially braced against bad weather and heavy seas. After unloading, the sea bracings were removed so the crane could be checked and adjusted.

Following full commissioning tests the crane is expected to be operational shortly.

Among the largest cranes in the port, the new quayside SSGC will be capable of handling containers stowed 22 wide. It will be equipped with twin lift capability and a heavy lift capacity of 85 tons.

The new crane will be deployed at the Port's Trinity Terminal, where a 270m extension of the deepwater container quay will become fully operational this month. The extension will enable the Port to accommodate two of the very largest new generation container vessels simultaneously.
