The first two of ten innovative platform supply vessels have gone to work in the Gulf of Mexico, deploying diesel electric propulsion systems which provide superior performance in the dynamic positioning (DP) mode and maximise design efficiency by eliminating the need for long shafts and reduction gears.
Boat Show Debut for Common Rail MTUs

MTU staged the UK debut of its new 2000 Common Rail marine engines at the Southampton Boat Show. UK yacht builders have already placed orders for the new models and delivery was expected to start last month. In addition to yachts, the first areas of application for the new 2000 Common Rail engines are patrol boats and fast commercial craft such as fast ferries.

Scania Powers Down for SMM

Scania has responded to customer feedback by extending the power range of its new 12 litre marine engine downwards to a version producing 300hp at 1,800rpm, expanding applicability for workboat installations. The new DI12M EMS, which was launched this summer at seawork2004, was featured on Scania's stand at SMM in Hamburg last month in a revised range which also extends upwards to 650hp at 2,200rpm.

Summer Debut for New Fast Water Jet

First deliveries took place recently of a new model in Italian manufacturer Castoldi's HC (Hydraulic Clutch) range of water jet drives. The Turbodrive 238 - HC weighs only 110 kg and can be matched to engines up to 420hp, making it suitable for single or twin unit installation in boats in the 6m to 10m range with displacements of from 2 to 6 tonnes.

RENK Gears Handle 20,000 RPM

Germany's RENK Aktiengesellschaft has won a contract with America's Pratt & Whitney Power Systems toprovide reduction gears for six Royal Norwegian Navy Skjold class patrol boats. The carbon fibre SES type catamarans are being built at the Umoe Mandal yard in Norway.
