Boat Show Debut for Common Rail MTUs

MTU staged the UK debut of its new 2000 Common Rail marine engines at the Southampton Boat Show. UK yacht builders have already placed orders for the new models and delivery was expected to start last month. In addition to yachts, the first areas of application for the new 2000 Common Rail engines are patrol boats and fast commercial craft such as fast ferries.

The new engines have been designed to ensure high power output, compactness and low weight whilst being capable of achieving 20% more propulsive power than engines in the current 2000 series which they will gradually replace. They are fitted with several innovative technologies, including common rail, sequential turbocharging, and newly developed electronics. The new 10V 2000 Common Rail is capable of the same power output as the currently available 12V 2000 but its bulk volume is one third lower and it weighs 20% less. This allows for smaller engine compartments and correspondingly larger cabins while the lower weight has a positive influence on speed and handling. Cylinder count variants (8V, 10V, 12V and 16V engines) cover the power outputs 1,200, 1,500, 1,800 and 2,400 hp. The 10 cylinder 10V bridges the gap between 8V and 12V which was not available in the previous 2000 series.

The engine speed range has been increased to a maximum of 2,450 rpm whilst low emissions and fuel consumption ensure that the engines comply with the EPA Tier 2/EU Directive 94/25/EC (Recreational Craft Directive). The 2000 Common Rail engines were designed as marine engines from the outset, unlike the preceding 2000 series which were derived from truck engines. Optimised adaptation to marine applications insures that surface temperatures should not exceed 220°C anywhere on the engine as per SOLAS safety regulations.

Measures to ensure this include the special design of the engines with charge air cooler integrated into the engine V, water cooled turbochargers, triple wall exhaust manifolds and expansion bellows and double walled fuel lines.
