    West Midlands UK crane manufacturer J Barnsley Cranes (JBC) has won a rollover contract to service, refurbish or replace all the cranes, hoists and jibs it supplied for the Thames Barrier when London's flood defence system was first constructed over 30 years ago.

  • New Crane Distributor Lifts Off

    Italian crane manufacturer Amco Veba took part in seawork for the first time this year, represented in the UK by the new company Idle, managed by Stuart Gilligan. 

  • Cranes Ordered for Antwerp's New Terminal

    Sweden headquartered Kalmar has two won orders from PSA/Hesse-Noord Natie for a total of eight super post-Panamax ship to shore (STS) container cranes for the Deurganckdok and Quay 913 in the port of Antwerp. With an outreach of 56m, these high speed, heavy duty cranes will be capable of handling ships over 20 containers wide. 

  • SCT's Cranes Lifted for Bigger Boxships

    Southampton Container Terminal has recently awarded Seward Lyon Ltd the contract to raise the height of five Morris quayside gantry cranes on its 204-205 container berths. 

  • Davits Complete North Sea Jigsaw

    After four years of developing the concept, Norwegian davit and boat handling systems manufacturer Vestdavit hassecured the contract to supply all davits to BP's Project Jigsaw , a totally new concept for offshore rescue and recovery operations in the North Sea.

  • Underwater Search for Iconic Shipwreck

    Russian and Danish divers used the first CE approved closed circuit breathing system last month during a four day underwater research mission in the Arctic's Chukchi Sea. The Inspiration Closed Circuit Rebreathers (CCR) are able to reuse the oxygen left unused in each exhaled breath while they simultaneously remove CO 2using a chemical 'trap'. The net result is greatly extended dive times with relatively small tanks. The CCR helped the eight divers to combat the sub-zero temperatures which exist at the site even in summer. 

  • Wijsmuller Divers Pump Oil from Wreck

    On May 22 this year the large tanker Kaminesan and the vehicle carrier Hyundai No 105 collided in the Singapore Straits, at a position some 6km south east of the island of Sentosa.

  • New Software for Hard Cutting

    Sliedrecht based dredging systems specialist IHC Systems BV has won an order from Belgian contractor Vlaamse Baggermaatschappiij NV toprovide an operational face lift for its 25 year old cutter suction dredger Vesalius . The vessel has been operating on the Spanish coast near Valencia but will be docked in the autumn for works which will include a partial renewal of the dredge control console. 

  • Dredging Demand Slows

    Dutch dredging giant Royal Boskalis Westminster has posted a modest net profit of ? 7.4m for the first half of 2004, reflecting both a global slowdown for the industry and Boskalis' own re-organisational process which has cost ? 10.7m and some 450 jobs.

  • EU Changes Upset UK Tonnage Tax

    Draft EU Guidelines on state aid to maritime industries, due to be accepted by member states by the end of June, create uncertainty and problems for the UK Tonnage Tax Scheme according to shipping accountants and business consultants Moore Stephens London . The new guidelines, which will enter into force on 1 July 2005, will oblige owners with fleets in the UK Tonnage Tax Regime toincrease the proportion of their vessels under an EU flag.

  • New Jetty in the Braakmanhaven

    Zeeland Seaports in the Netherlands, (which include the ports of Terneuzen and Vlissingen) says a new jetty is being constructed in the Braakmanhaven in the harbour at Terneuzen. The jetty is primarily intended for use by Oil Tanking Ghent . 

  • Marina at Heart of Irish Coast Defence Project

    Preliminary details of a new marina development in Ireland have been announced by Wicklow County Council . The County Council is the promoter for the project, and has recently invited tenders for design, build, financing and operation of a new marina as part of a larger mixed use waterfront development. 

  • City of Helsinki Appeals Against Vuosaari Ruling

    The City of Helsinki in Finland says it intends to take appeal against a recent ruling that has brought to a halt dredging work for the huge new Vuosaari port project. 

  • Contract Awarded for Droylsden Canal Quarter

    A contract to implement a large scale re-development project in the canal quarter in Droylsden, in the Tameside area of the UK, has been awarded to a Bangor-based company, Watkin Jones Ltd.  Watkins Jones was selected as the preferred developer for the £100m, five-year East Manchester project in June. The aim of the project is to produce a mixed-use 'urban-village' waterfront community on an existing 14-acre site which will include a new, 30berth marina, commercial and leisure facilities, a chandlery and boat service point.

  • Call to Maintain Water Freight Grants

    Sea and Water , the UK organisation promoting the use of short sea, coastal and inland waterways to move freight, have urged the government to maintain a dedicated budget for water freight grants. The call follows upon the recently published government white paper The Future for Transport , which outlines future government transport policy. 

  • Wind Blade Record for Southampton

    The largest shipment of wind turbine blades ever exported from the UK left the ABP Port of Southampton recently on board MV Atlas Gracht , the longest vessel to be operated by Vestas Wind Systems (formerly NEG Micon Rotors Ltd ). 

  • 150 Years for Receiver of Wreck

    One hundred and fifty years of the Receiver of Wreck were celebrated aboard HMS Warrior at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard recently. Created with the passage of the Merchant Shipping Act in 1854, the Receiver of Wreck deals with wreck and salvage issues on behalf of the Crown. To mark the occasion, the Mary Rose Trust declared a 4in diameter stone shot ball recovered after 459 years on the seabed in a dive this year.

  • London Cruise Terminal Opens

    The Port of London Authority has opened a new passenger cruise terminal in ceremonies at Greenwich. The purpose built floating terminal is modelled on an airport layout, meets the requirements of the ISPS Code , and has provision for on-site immigration and customs. It will enable ships up to 240m long and carrying up to 1,000 passengers to carry out full passenger and baggage embarkation and disembarkation in the heart of London. 

  • UK Cleans Up

    The UK's Maritime and Coastguard Agency published its 2003 survey of reported discharges attributed to vessels and offshore oil and gas installations operating in the country's pollution control zone last month. It shows an overall 16.8% reduction in reported discharges of pollutants into the sea. During 2003 there were four successful oil pollution prosecutions with another case waiting to be called.

    The first ever power generation from an offshore wave machine into the UK power grid took place last month at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney. 

  • Isle of Wight Coastal Protection Works are Completed

    Some one and a half years of close collaboration between Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service and Portchester UK based boatbuilders VTHalmatic came to fruitition at seawork 2004 with the appearance on the floating pontoon of a first of type, purpose-built fire and rescue boat. This variant of an RTK6065 had successfully completed trials before seawork and was delivered to the Service two days after the show on 26 June. 

  • Early Retirement for 'Water Witch' Founder

    At the age of 91, Mary Caddick, who founded Liverpool Water Witch with her husband over 40 years ago, is stepping down and handing the helm over to her son, the company's managing director Joseph Caddick.

    Zephyr , a recently completed 6.9m Cheetah Survey Catamaran , was delivered by Isle of Wight based Cheetah Marine to the Southampton Oceanography Centre in late July. The vessel will be used primarily for bathymetric surveys of the nearshore sub-tidal zone in the Christchurch Bay area and is owned and run by the New Forest District Council/Channel Coastal Observatory , in partnership with the Southampton Oceanography Centre.

    Adsteam Medway has become the first of the group's UK ports to achieve certified compliance with the International Safety Management standard, following a three-day audit by Lloyds Register . 

  • Towlines

    Rynwaal Shipyards (an associate of Shipyard K Damen )has purchased three former US Army tugs on behalf of the Nigerian Port Authority . The tugs arrived in Hardinxveldt in August under their own power bearing the new names Balali (ex: LT1960 ), Irrua (ex: LT 2081 ) and Ogmoboso ( LT 2092 ). It is understood that the tugs are required as part of a major overhaul and refurbishment programme being carried out by the shipyard for the Nigerian PA - a project involving some 32 vessels. The tugs first sold from the US Army Depot at Hythe in 2002 have been laid up in Southampton. All three of the 30.48m single screw vessels were re-conditioned at Hythe in 1995 and fitted with 2150bhp EMD main engines, new gearboxes and fixed nozzles.

  • Fowey Harbour Commissioners introduce the new launch 'Polmear'

    The new multi-purpose launch Polmear is now in service with the The Fowey Harbour Commissioners . Built principally to serve the nearby port of Par, the new vessel replaces an earlier dual-purpose pilot/workboat that has given good service since its introduction in 1977.

  • Enzymes Attack Fuel System Superbugs

    Hugo Wall's earliest recollection of fuel system contamination dates to a Reader's Digest article he read in the 1960s about a Second World War cruiser trying to raise steam to escape Valetta Harbour in Malta as dive bombers approached. The ship's boilers were coughing, spluttering and finally died. Despite the fuel gauges reading full and everything appearing normal, an inspection of the bunkers revealed 'a three foot long frond of growth'. 

  • Multijet's Fast Blast for 'European Diplomat'

    UHP (UK) recently won a contract to remove 1,600m2 of epoxy mastic coating from the main and upper decks of P&OIrish Seas ' ferry European Diplomat within a very tight time frame.
