BlueSky Meets Sea for UKHO
01 Sep 2004
Aerial photography company BlueSky has supplied the UKHydrographic Office with high resolution coastal imagery to aid in the production of charts that accurately reproduce the rise and fall of the land in coastal zones.
The charts, which will initially be used for specific military exercises in Scotland, provide highly detailed information of the inter tidal zones, depth of water, seabed obstructions and coastal features such as sand dunes not provided by available topographic mapping.
In this application the Hydrographic Office takes raw digital aerial photography plus data from the survey aeroplane's highly accurate positioning equipment to facilitate photo triangulation. Photogrammetric processing of the stereo pairs of photography generates three dimensional information, which supplements traditional boat based hydrographic surveys.
The charts accurately map every detail of the coastal zone, including topographic features such as sand dunes. Colour aerial photography is also useful for highlighting other littoral details such as seaweed or sea grass.
Where the water is clear, features of navigational significance can be derived to a depth of about 15m.
