Transas Supplies Simulator to Rauma Maritime Museum
01 Sep 2004
New technology met with old when Transas delivered a Navi-Trainer Professional 4000 simulator to the Rauma Maritime Museum in Finland.
The simulator comprises three visualisation channels and a reduced set of real ship's controls hardware, while the simulator's bridge resembles a 1930's steamer with an old-fashioned helm, engine telegraph and chart table, although a radar screen is located on starboard side and an ECDIS is set on the port side.
The sea, landscape and other visual images are projected on to a 158 degrees screen at the bridge front, providing a very realistic view.
Some 15 different ship types are offered by the simulator, so visitors to the museum can choose from a 320,000 tons VLCC or a cruise ship to a fast ferry or small patrol boat with a speed of 45 knots to try out their navigational skills.
The practice areas include a great number of locations around the world including Dover, Sydney, San Francisco, Gibraltar, Helsinki and Rauma itself.
Inside the bridge there is a space for three navigators; the master, mate and helmsman.
The instructor is needed only to start the educational phase.
As an essential part of the Rauma Maritime Museum, the simulator bridge has been adapted for children and has several levels of skill complexity, each based on the navigator's experience.
The Rauma Maritime Museum has established a goal to create a new learning environment for different age groups, as well as to inspire intense interest towards modern museums and science centres while promoting safe navigational practices.
