New Engine as 'Gipsy Moth IV' Sails Again

A regular quayside exhibitor at Seawork , EP Barrus Ltd is supporting a project to restore the historic sailing vessel Gipsy Moth IV . The Isle of Wight based charity United Kingdom Sailing Academy (UKSA) has come to the aid of the vessel through a partnership between Yachting Monthly and the Maritime Trust .The academy has purchased the vessel for the sum of £1 and a Gin & Tonic.
Barrus has become a Technical Supplier to the project, donating a Yanmar 4JH4 water cooled diesel engine and will provide full technical support throughout the refit, which is being assisted by the Camper and Nicholson yard which originally built the vessel.
The Yanmar 4JH4 is a naturally aspirated, water cooled four cylinder diesel displacing 2.19 litres and rated 54hp at 3,000rpm. Based on a completely redesigned cylinder block and combustion system, the engine has the benefits of quietness and low vibration coupled with a high power to weight ratio. It also meets EPA Tier 2 emission regulations.
Once fully restored, Gipsy Moth will set out on a 40th anniversary 'Sail of the Centenary' voyage, undertaking a 22 month circumnavigation of the world. Upon its return, Gipsy Moth IV will be based at UKSA in Cowes, where it will be used to encourage youngsters of differing backgrounds and abilities to take part in sailing.
