Dredging Partnership Deepens Scapa Pier

The Danish backhoe dredger M/S Margrethe Fighter from the fleet of Peter Madsen Rederi A/S is carrying out works at Scapa Pier, Orkney in a joint venture project with the Shetland based engineering and marine contractor Tulloch Developments Ltd .

The dredging is being carried out from both land (Tulloch) and sea (Peter Madsen Rederi), with a total of 8,000m 3ofsand/silt and clay being dredged from down to 6m chart datum or just above the new sheet pile toe level. This is the latest phase in the ongoing modernisation of the Pier and will allow better access for the pilot boats berthing there. All dredged material from these works for the Orkney Islands Council is sailed to a disposal area 10 nautical miles south of the Pier.

The works are part of continuing developments by both Tulloch Developments Ltd and Peter Madsen Rederi to expand activities from their home markets of Shetland and Scandinavia respectively through partnerships with other specialist contractors.

In 2003 Tulloch, with the assistance of Peter Madsen Rederi, successfully completed a new ferry pier on the outlying Shetland island of Papa Stour.

Tulloch Developments have also recently completed rock removal at the Ulsta Ferry Terminal for Shetland Island Council, working with drilling and blasting contractor Rockfall Ltd.

Upon completion of the Scapa Pier project, Peter Madsen and Tulloch will continue their partnership in the Orkneys with a 12,000m 3dredging contract for a new navigation channel into Kirkwall Harbour.
