Software Upgrade for Original 'Jumbo'
01 Apr 2005
Belgian dredging contractor Dredging International hasordered a replacement from IHC Systems for the original Human Machine Interface (HMI) SCADA presentation system on its trailing suction hopper dredger Pearl River .
Pearl River was the original 'jumbo dredger' when launched at 17,000m 3capacity in 1994, paving the way for a generation of jumbos which transformed project planners' perceptions of what the dredging industry could do. Enlarged to 24,146m 3capacity in 2002, Pearl River iscurrently working in China.
The SCADA presentation system was developed cooperatively between DI and IHC Systems for the contractor's more recent newbuild trailer Pallieter and reflects a delicate balance between process and diagnostic presentation. The project started with a detailed verification/specification phase and will comprise an in-house application software development for both SCADA and PLC control. A factory acceptance test to enable a smooth switch will preface implementation on board the ship, which is scheduled for the middle of this year.
Elsewhere, German dredging contractor Johann Bunte has ordered IHC Systems' new generation eXcavator Position Monitor (XPM) for its backhoe dredger JBP63 , which features a Liebherr R964 dipper unit. Bunte acquired a backhoe fleet when taking over the German onshore activities of Heinrich Hirdes from Royal Boskalis Westminster.
The XPM-NG (New Generation) is the result of collaboration between IHC Systems and its subsidiary, the dredging instrumentation supplier Meconaut. The experience of both companies has led to the XPM-NG's automation capabilities and presentational features. The re-designed XPM system will have various interfaces to satisfy owners' requirements for information exchange with third party navigation equipment, survey equipment, and digital terrain model (DTM) presentation.
IHC Systems has also won an order from DI sister company SDI of France to supply a 120150(DEGREE) dynamic outside view to be added to their cutter suction dredger simulator in Lambersart, near Lille. It will be used to educate present and future cutter suction dredger crew.
