New Sumrad ECDIS

Simrad , part of the Norwegian Kongsberg Group , has announced a new Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS), the CS68, a fully Wheelmark approved unit based on a dedicated MC50 marine computer and designed for installation aboard SOLAS category vessels.

According to the Tim Ryder, the company's senior product manager, with the CS68 on board it will be possible to sail without any paper charts whatsoever and thus herald introduction of a new phrase for the world of electronic navigation, PLECDIS, or paperless ECDIS.

With automatic updates for new charts and corrections, he adds, CS68 enables a vessel's navigation operations to become truly self-sufficient.

Developed with the assistance of professional navigators, CS68 utilises a RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) facility for approved backup solutions and a 24V DC power supply for more cost effective installation and better reliability compared with other power systems. Associated software supports presentation of all other navigational information along with dedicated chart level presentation keys and a man overboard key as well as anti- grounding with virtual radar and collision warning.

There are also provisions for voice alarms for early warning of imminent navigation danger, quick and true route navigation, and distribution of data throughout all sectors of a vessel.
