Agreement on River Meuse Border Project

Van Oord Nederland has signed a joint venture contract to execute the River Meuse Border Project .

The River Meuse is to be enlarged between the cities of Maastricht and Roosteren near the Belgian border. The objectives of the project are to protect the hinterland from high waters, to develop the local natural environment and to extract gravel.

When the necessary permits are obtained the work will start as soon as possible, in order to achieve the agreed high water level target for 2017.

The Public Private Cooperation agreement between the local authorities and the Consortium Grensmaas BV, in which Van Oord Nederland is a participant, is the result of years of intensive preparation.

Van Oord Nederland has also signed a contract to dismantle the Papegaaiebek dredged sludge depot on the Maasvlakte, part of the Port of Rotterdam.

The Rotterdam Port Authority is the client for the project, which is worth some 8m. The work is due to start this month and be completed in July 2006.

Some 1.2 million m 3 of heavily polluted dredging sludge is to be removed from the Papegaaiebek depot and pumped hydraulically to the nearby Slufter depot.

Van Oord is to deploy the cutter suction dredger Sliedrecht 27 andauger dredger HAM 291 . The company will also use a discharge pipeline of approximately 11km and a water pipeline of the same length returning the discharge water.
