The multi-purpose vessel will undertake a range of functions in the port and its approaches, including hydrographic survey, pollution control, shellfish sampling, pushing and pilotage as well as providing a mobile support platform for the port's VTS. The twin screw vessel has been designed for a service speed of about 12 knots.

With a steel heavy duty hull and aluminium wheelhouse the vessel will be built to Lloyds SSC Workboat G2 rules and will meet the requirements of the Irish Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources for the issuing of a P5 certificate.

A hydraulic knuckle boom crane will be provided on the aft deck for handling oil pollution booms and sampling equipment and substantial fendering will be fitted forward to allow the vessel to safely push cargo vessels.

Seating will be arranged in the wheelhouse for two crew and a total of four pilots/survey personnel. The wheelhouse features 3600 vision including overhead windows.

Macduff Ship Design was successful in competitive tendering for the project, which is supported by the European Structural Funds, Interreg 111A Programme for Ireland and Northern Ireland 2000-2006, Priority 2, Measure 1, Project Ref: 017982.

Macduff will provide detailed design drawings for the vessel and is now managing preparation of the tender to build, which is expected to go out shortly.

Macduff will also project manage the build and supervise trials, with delivery planned for the second quarter of next year.
