Third Torpoint Ferry Due This Month
01 Aug 2005
The construction of three new chain driven ferries for the Torpoint Ferry Service in the UK's West Country is on schedule, with two of the vessels already delivered and the third due to be delivered this month. The vessels have been built by Ferguson Shipbuilders of Port Glasgow and assisted by sub-contract partner Inviron Marine Systems .
Torpoint Ferries carry out a vital transport service, linking Plymouth in Devon with Torpoint in Cornwall with regular sailings across the River Tamar for daily commuters and seasonal tourists alike.
The first vessel, Plym II , was delivered last December while the second, Tamar II , has been undergoing commissioning and trials recently. The third vessel is Lynher II . The new vessels each has an improved capacity for 73 cars as well as better safety features, wider vehicle lanes, easier access for users, reduced noise levels, and a more sophisticated drive arrangement.
A key sub-contractor on the £15m works has been Glasgow based Inviron Marine Systems, which was drafted in to design, supply and install electrical and HVAC systems for all three ferries. Inviron's close working relationship with Ferguson Shipbuilders dates back to the 1970s, when the yard was a member company of British Shipbuilders.
