Major Refit for Aggregate Dredgers
01 Aug 2005
Over the last decade, United Marine Dredging’s 1990 built City of London and City of Westminster have averaged over 1 million tons a year of marine aggregate delivered back into the UK and to the near Continent. However, with the main propulsion plant becoming increasingly unreliable, costly and difficult to maintain, it was decided that a major refit was required to ensure the vessels’<$>performance for their remaining lives in service.
A major programme was started first with the City of London, involving the replacement of the main engines, propellers and loading towers. The opportunity was also taken to upgrade the engine room alarm and monitoring plant, completely overhaul the main gearboxes and main engine driven alternators.
Works undertaken at Amsterdam Ship Reapir BV has seen the installation of two new Wärtsilä 6L2622 main engines, two Wärtsilä 2.9m diameter type 4D710 propellers, and two Wärtsilä type 19A propeller nozzles. Cormac Engineering supplied the new loading towers and Radamec Control Systems provided the alarm and monitoring plant.
City of London has now been completed with the City of Westminster to follow later in the year.
