Successful River Scheldt Salvage

Dutch salvage company Multraship, working with Belgian salvor URS, has successfully refloated the 3,758gt chemical tanker Philipp Essberger, which grounded in the River Scheldt near Flushing following a reported engine failure.

The vessel, loaded with caustic soda and ethylene, was refloated using the tugs Barracuda and Braakman, with Multratug 10 and Multratug 15 standing by. The vessel was moved to an anchorage for a diving inspection on the next high tide. No pollution occurred and no visible damage was found so authorities granted permission to proceed to the Dow Chemical berth at Ternuezen.

Over the course of what has been a busy year, Multraship also recently salvaged the 2,757teu container ship Fowairet, which suffered hogging damage and hold flooding after running aground between Terneuzen and Antwerp.

It has expanded its Black Sea operations with the purchase of Bulgarian towage and salvage operator Bourgas Tug Services and has also been working on the removal of the Rostok from the Danube in combination with Titan and Deltacons.

Two Multraship boats, the Multrasalvor and the Patrol, have been working on a project in Kazakstan for Wagenborg, whilst other Multraship tugs have carried out over 40 sea towage jobs in the North Sea, Black Sea, Baltic and the Mediterranean. These include the towage of an empty submersible barge from Rotterdam to Lagos using Multratug 7 while Barracuda towed a crane barge from Rotterdam to Lisbon, then delivered a dredger to Latvia, and is now delivering a newbuild pontoon from the Black Sea to Norway.
