Mobile Fire Fighting Launch at Europort
01 Dec 2005
Debuted at the Europort Maritime exhibition in Rotterdam last month is Cyprus-based OmniQual Ltd, offering an impressive range of German-built portable fire fighting units.
Available in trolley mounted and backpack small versions as well as a high capacity 'Cheetah' modular unit designed to slot into the back of a pickup truck, this equipment built by Advanced Firefighting Technology GmbH provides users with self-contained fire fighting systems which can take immediate and effective control of emergency situations in ports, harbours, shipyards and on board ships.
The 35 and 50 litre water-mist or water-mist/foam trolley units feature a sophisticated nozzle that can be quickly switched from long reach jet to local spray pattern and the unique application gun which provides the patented low pressure water mist technology, with its fire killing atomisation of 100-150 microns. Trolley units are available with hoses of up to 10m in length and provide highly effective mobile coverage for machinery spaces, cargo manifolds and vehicle decks. They use standard compressed air bottles normally on board many workboats as the driving medium. A normal presence on board affords the opportunity to train personnel regularly. Changing the air bottle and recharging the reservoir sees the equipment ready to go again within minutes.
The OmniQual trolley units have full marine and shore type approvals and are suitable for Class A and B fires (Class B using the AFT01 foam compound). They are also rated for electrical fires when fitted with a special order gun.
The 9 litre water-mist or water-mist/foam backpack units are scaled down versions of the trolley units and use the same nozzle and minimal kickback application gun as the larger siblings. Their portability brings immediate low pressure water-mist technology response to enclosed or restricted spaces.
These units are available with the optional SCBA mount, which combines a breathing apparatus bottle, mask and associated equipment onto the one harness, allowing the fire fighter to enter a space equipped with both the means of life support and the means of fire fighting.
OmniQual's scaled up Cheetah units address larger fires which may occur within a port complex, a shipyard or a ship repair facility. Designed to fit the cargo area of a standard pickup truck, they provide a mobile, high capacity fire fighting unit limited only by the capabilities of the vehicle on which they are mounted.
