01 Dec 2005
Wallenius Wilhelmsen christened the latest addition to its fleet of environmentally responsible car carriers at a recent naming ceremony in Baltimore USA.
The 20,228dwt M/V Toronto can carry upwards of 6,500 cars and will be deployed on Wallenius Wilhelmsen's global trade routes.
M/V Toronto is one of a series of ships acclaimed for its highly optimised PCTC design that combines double bottom fuel tanks and solid ballast with cargo space that maximises the capacity and flexibility to carry cars and a wide variety of ro-ro cargoes including construction and agricultural equipment. This new series of PCTC's received the ShipPax Award for Outstanding Ro-Ro Cargo Decks last year.
M/V Toronto is the third of a series of six new ships being built for Wilhelmsen and is one of 14 new ships that will be put into service by Wallenius Wilhelmen over the next four years.
Its advanced hull and propeller design and yard patented stator fins are expected to deliver a 10% reduction in fuel consumption, helping the company to meet ambitious environmental targets for 2005 and beyond which include an average of 1.5% sulphur in the fuel oil, the use of tin-free antifoulant bottom paints, a ballast water exchange system, CFC and HCFC free cooling agents in refrigeration plant, and biodegradable oil in the stern tubes.
