Consortium Awarded Doha Airport Contract

Doha International Airport Steering Committee in Qatar has awarded a contract for dredging and reclamation for the new Doha International Airport to a consortium of four dredging companies.

The members of this consortium are the local Qatar Dredging Company, Dredging International of Belgium, Great Lakes Dredging & Dock Company in the US and Royal Boskalis Westminster in the Netherlands.

Qatar Dredging Company is a Qatari-Belgian joint venture between Dredging International (DEME-Group) of Belgium, a private Qatari partner UDC, and the Government of Qatar.

The US-based engineering company Bechtel is the Project Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM) contractor and representative of the owner of the project.

The contract is worth some ? 337m, with an execution period of 24 months, and covers the creation of a new platform for the construction of the international airport and involves the borrowing at sea and reclamation of 60 million m 3of sand.

The execution of the project will require the mobilisation by the consortium of several heavy-duty cutter suction dredgers and trailing suction hopper dredgers. A total number of 11 major dredging vessels will be employed.
